CLEARING GOD’S NAME
In the course of a lifetime every human being builds a name for themselves. The character associated with our name is the legacy we leave behind. Most of us want to be known for the good we have done and the obstacles we have overcome. No life, of course, is without fault, mistakes or errors in judgment. However, no decent human being wants to be known by their lapses and their shortcomings, but rather by how they triumphed over them and went on to do good.
The only thing we keep in death is our name and the character associated with that name over a lifetime. It is so hard to make and keep a good name that the law recognizes slander as a crime. It is very hard to undo the damage of malicious talk, which has ruined one’s name or reputation. Breaking God’s ninth commandment is, therefore, a cardinal sin. “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” (Exodus 20:16)
When people first meet one another, the introduction always includes their names. From first impressions onward, your name will take on the characteristics and qualities that literally become you in the mind of the other person. That is precisely why God guards His name so very carefully.
God calls Himself by a number of different names in the Bible, each revealing an aspect of His character. God does not mince words. He calls things what they are. An example can be found in Genesis 25:24-26, the story of Rebekah giving birth to Esau and Jacob. “So when her days were fulfilled for her to give birth, indeed there were twins in her womb. And the first came out red. He was like a hairy garment all over; so they called his name Esau. Afterward his brother came out, and his hand took hold of Esau’s heel; so his name was called Jacob.” “Esau” in Hebrew means rough, and “Jacob” means supplanter or deceitful, as one who takes the heel.
Esau grew to be a rough and tough hunter, and Jacob grew to be a little sneaky and shady, especially when dealing with his twin brother (tricking him out of his birthright). In Genesis 32 Jacob had an interesting wrestling match with God in which he prevailed. At the end of this match in verse 28, God changed his name to reflect a more favorable quality in Jacob. “And He said, ‘Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.’” “Israel” means he and his descendants will rule, a prophecy concerning the firstfruits we have been studying in previous Digests. We could go on and look at how God changed the name of Abram to Abraham meaning Father of the Faithful, and to the meaning behind the names of the prophets, but rather let’s go back to the names of God.
KNOW GOD THROUGH HIS NAMES
God’s names reveal His character to us. In Isaiah 9:6-7 it speaks of Christ this way: “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end…” These names characterize the kind of ruler Christ will be and how peaceful His kingdom will also be.
If you were to study God’s names in the Bible, you would find that He has names such as these: El Shaddai (God Almighty, Almighty Blessed), Father of Lights (to shine or to make manifest as in James 1:17), Yahweh Raphah (God of Healings), Emmanuel (God With Us), Faithful and True, the Rock, Yahweh (I am and will continue to be that which I am), Our Savior, Our Redeemer (the One who purchases us back with His blood). Finally, in this shortened list is Logos, which is a name for Christ meaning The Word.
He spoke, and God the Father’s will was done. He also speaks to us in His divinely inspired Bible. This makes the Bible the book of His dynamic and powerful thoughts. A couple of scriptures convey this beautifully. John 1:1-4 “In the beginning was the Word [the Logos] and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” To this we add II Timothy 3:16-17. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God [which means in the Greek God-breathed] and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
Delving into these two sets of scriptures we can see that on one hand God is a Creator, the builder of the universe and all that we see. On the other hand, His ultimate purpose is to give mankind all he needs to create good character. So within the pages of God’s word is all the wisdom we need in order to grow that beautiful character. This is what God calls bearing fruit.
People of godly character form the two harvests that we have studied in Digest No. 5. No human being can live a life without sin, so God the Father, “…so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…” (John 3:16) and provided a way to wash us clean of those sins. However, God cannot go on to create good character within each of us. That is our job.
Since God cannot tolerate even the least bit of sin, He gave His Son to remove our sins – if we let Him. However, our job is to build holy righteous character through obedience to Him, character being the only thing God cannot create by Himself. Therefore we see that the curse of the wages of sin which is death (Romans 6:23) can be lifted by God. But we still have plenty of work to do in our own lives.
Our merciful, kind and loving Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, have planned and worked hard to deliver mankind from the predicament They knew would befall us. Titus 1:1-3 makes this absolutely clear through Paul’s inspired words. “Paul, a bondservant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect and the acknowledgment of the truth which accords with godliness, in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began, but has in due time manifested His word through preaching, which was committed to me according to the commandment of God our Savior…” They did not embark on a project with an uncertain outcome.
The truth of redemption from sin and eternal life was established by the Father and the Logos before physical time even began! Furthermore, the acknowledgement of these eternal truisms would be accomplished by preaching. By extension then, correct preaching must properly revere God’s name and never do anything to harm that name. This places a huge responsibility on any human being who teaches from God’s word. We will now begin to contrast what God says about Himself and what is said of Him or about Him, usually in ignorance. The following are a few pertinent scriptures regarding our great God, the qualities He wants us to see in His name, the beautiful thoughts behind that name of His, and His age-old plan.
– Psalm 9:9-10 “The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; for You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.”
– Psalm 8:1, 3-5 and 9 “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth, who have set Your glory above the heavens!” Verse 3: “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him? For You have made him a little lower than the angels, and You have crowned him with glory and honor.” Verse 9: “O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is Your name in all the earth!”
– Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”
– Matthew 6:9-15 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
God’s plan that is now eons old is all about mercy and forgiveness because that is an essential part of His character. He is also exceedingly fair. If we are unwilling to pick up our cross and follow Christ in our everyday life, we are in trouble. Christ’s life and death were designed to provide mercy and forgiveness. An unrepentant, unforgiving attitude jeopardizes this beautiful concept and blocks God‘s gift of grace.
SLANDERING GOD’S NAME
We must now look into how mankind has been duped into slandering God’s name. We have sold God short and blackened His name in many ways. God’s arch enemy, Satan, provider of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, has been behind this horrible deception.
TWO WAYS OF LIFE
There are two basic ways of life currently battling for supremacy in the universe. The preeminent way is God’s way: the way of loving and giving. This way is eternal, having had no beginning, for God is eternal. God’s way of life reflects His perfect character and, therefore, His name. The God family composed of God the Father and Jesus Christ, the Logos (which means the “Word,” John 1:1-3) were in complete harmony. Both were filled with tremendous love to share, and so embarked on a well thought-out plan to build and create. Step by step They would create living beings to share Their existence.
As far as the Bible seems to show, angels were His first creation project. They were created with the incomparable gift of free will. God does not want to share existence with mere machines, but with rational thinking beings He can love and share life with. It is up to those created beings to return that love to God voluntarily. Psalm 103:20-22 express this well. “Bless the Lord, you His angels, who excel in strength, who do His word, heeding the voice of His word. Bless the Lord, all you His hosts, you ministers of His, who do His pleasure. Bless the Lord, all His works, in all places of His dominion.”
We know from scripture that the angels were present when the earth’s foundations were laid at creation. We are told that in Job 38:4-7. God talks to Job and gives us some prehistoric insight. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?”
Let’s glean what we can from these intriguing verses by asking a basic question. Since this is obviously speaking of creation before man existed, who are these stars and sons of God who sang for joy? They were angels. Angels are often depicted as stars in the Bible as noted in Revelation 1:20. “The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.” To this verse we add Job 1:6 to see that angels are also called sons of God. “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.” Therefore, the stars and sons that sang for joy were none other than the angels, Satan among them, who sang at the earth’s creation.
Notice again in Job 38:4 and 6 the term “foundations” is used twice, but in Hebrew these are two different words. The first use means to consult together and refers to God the Father and Jesus Christ planning together. The question to Job could be rendered: Where were you when We designed the earth? The second use of the word “foundations” actually refers to the construction of the earth and creation.
Satan was there, but only, at that time, he was called Lucifer; an appropriate name for him at the time for it reflected his character. Lucifer means “light bringer” which in essence means “truth bearer.” Light in the Bible represents truth. Lucifer would have been very happy at earth’s creation, because God had given him authority over it. In John 14:30 (King James Version) Christ calls Satan “prince of this world,” and in II Corinthians 4:4 he is called god of this world (god with a little “g”).
Lucifer had been a chief angel. Somewhere along the line, Lucifer’s character changed from light bringer or servant of God to God’s arch enemy, Satan. God changed his name to Satan to reflect his new-found, self-chosen character. This change in character introduced a second way of life into the universe, a life style in diametric opposition to God’s way of love and outgoing concern. God reveals the history of this change in a remarkable way in Ezekiel 28:11-16. We will start with verses 11-13. “Moreover the word of the Lord came to me [Ezekiel] saying, ‘Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, “Thus says the Lord God: ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.’”’”
These verses start by calling Lucifer the king of Tyre, an ancient city on the Mediterranean coast. That is because he is head of the spiritual principalities over this earth (Ephesians 6:12). Being spiritual, however, he must work through and influence humanity as he did here in the person of the king of Tyre. We know here God is referring to Satan because this king of Tyre was not in the Garden of Eden. Tyre did not exist until nearly 3,000 years after the story of the Garden of Eden!
Now let’s continue with verses 14-16. “You were the anointed cherub who covers. [a reference to being an archangel] I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones. [He had a position, therefore, in God’s heavenly throne.] You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you. By the abundance of your trading [the influence he peddled] you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones.” It is of interest to note that Satan, by deceitful peddling of his lies, was able to rob God of one-third of His angels. Thus, he disrupted heaven with the violence of angelic warfare (Revelation 12:4 and 7).
When Satan was cast from God’s throne in heaven, earth became the central battleground of the universe. (See Digest No. 7 “Battleground Earth”.) The war is now being fought through flesh and blood human beings. Christ told His apostles of this prehistoric event in Luke 10:18. “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.” The battle was joined on earth when Satan caused the fall of Adam and Eve, bringing sin to this planet. For this heinous deed God cursed Satan. In Genesis 3:14, “Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life.” Satan had brought sin into the world making it once again part of his dark realm, as Digests No. 1 through 4 covered. His kingdom of darkness can only continue so long as he can succeed in causing humanity to sin, which the Bible terms “eating the dust”. Mankind is that living dust. (However, God intends to liberate mankind prior to completion of 6,000 years of Satanic rule.) Satan was eminently successful until he ran up against Jesus Christ, our Savior, Champion, and Redeemer. Christ came to bring down the evil government of Satan and remove him from the earth, his last bastion of power. Note John 12:31-32 where Christ explains this. “Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be cast out. And I, if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all peoples to Myself.”
Christ succeeded. Now the most Satan can hope for is to extend his time of rulership and postpone his punishment. He wants to prevent the fall of his system of principalities. His only hope is to deprive God of His firstfruit harvest, which God’s plan needs to furnish the world with His benevolent and loving government. (See Digest No. 5 “God’s Harvests”.) Satan wants to deny humanity the kingdom of God.
Satan uses his power and influence to stamp his image and likeness on mankind. He works in the lives of human beings, constantly stirring up strife, hatred, selfishness, lust, and greed. Certain worldly kingdoms have really personified his character traits, which is why Ezekiel 28 called Satan the king of Tyre. He was, indeed, the power behind the scenes of that kingdom. Tyre was an ancient Phoenician city-state. Their religion was so influenced by Satan that nations around them found it repulsive. Infanticide was a big part of their religion – enough said.
For these evils and rebellion God removed him as a covering cherub and cast him away from His throne. We will look at some scriptures to show how hundreds of years later Satan was now presiding over Babylon and influencing its king. In fact the name Babylon in Hebrew and Greek in both the Old Testament and New Testament means confusion, tyranny, and oppression. This is a name that has since stuck on Satan’s spiritual realm. This name will apply to Satan’s evil spiritual realm until it is destroyed at Christ’s second coming mentioned in Revelation 18:2-3. “And He cried mightily with a loud voice, saying, ‘Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and hated bird! [another reference to fallen angels] For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her luxury.”
Satan’s realm has been influencing all the nations and peoples of the earth for 6,000 years. The name of this spiritual realm is Babylon. It would be wrong to point the finger of blame at any one nation, people or religion as the main source of this sin and violence. To do so is to believe another lie of Satan and to take the blame off him where it surely belongs. Always keep in mind Revelation 12:9. “So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world…” What part of whole don’t we understand?
Now let’s go to Isaiah 14 where God calls Satan the real king over Babylon. Isaiah 14:3-4 and 12-15. “It shall come to pass in the day the Lord gives you rest from your sorrow [the Millennial reign just ahead] and from your fear and the hard bondage in which you were made to serve, that you will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say: ‘How the oppressor has ceased, the golden city ceased!’” Verse 12: “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations! For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’ Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the lowest depths of the Pit.”
Lucifer, the light bringer, became Satan the devil when he decided to rule the universe in God’s stead. He wanted God’s position, but he will lose the war that he started. He and his demons will be replaced by Christ’s wonderful government as evident in Isaiah 9:6-7. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.” To the people of the world God made this promise, and nothing will stop Him from keeping it.
God will keep His promise on His own terms, not Satan’s. God is a creator and a builder. He created the world and the universe, for that matter, for the great wonderful kingdom of God – a peaceful kingdom with abundance for all. That is what God’s name stands for. In contrast we now live under Satan’s principalities based on a system of lies, extreme competition, selfishness, greed and violence. This oppressive darkness and ignorance will soon be lifted, and that is the good news.
Satan has convinced the world that a horrible event is about to fall upon the earth, and that it will be at God’s hand. This is a lie! God scoffs at Satan’s desire to destroy the earth. Jesus Christ will not return to rule a nuclear wasteland. Satan has succeeded in getting the world to believe God wants to destroy the earth and its inhabitants, sparing a few “special people”. Satan has convinced each separate religion and race that they are the special ones, and it is everyone else who deserves to die. This lie has been used to divide the earth into many desperate factions and groups filled with mistrust, hatred, envy, and racism. The resulting ethnic cleansing and religious warfare and class struggles have pitted humanity against humanity. This is often done in God’s name. We should ask which god, the God of peace or the god of this world?
Why do so many around the world look to wars, rumors of wars, famines, pestilences and earthquakes as signs that Christ’s peaceful government is at hand? In Matthew 24:5-7 and Luke 21:7-10 Christ emphatically said not to look to those signs. Mankind has always had such calamities. We discussed the true signs and wonders in Digest No. 8. Jesus Christ is coming to deliver us from the constant sorrow and to teach all mankind to “beat their swords into plowshares” and no longer learn war (Isaiah 2:4).
How did Satan twist our minds on this important subject? He did this by getting us to apply his own qualities and attributes to God. That’s what he has done. He put his own name and desires into our most cherished ideals and beliefs. Instead of the ideas and thoughts of the great God of the universe, we have his thoughts in our minds and hearts. Just look at the meanings behind Satan’s name to see that this is so.
– Satan, Old Testament #7854: opponent, arch enemy of good, adversary, to attack, to accuse.
– Satan, in the Greek, the New Testament #4567: the accuser.
– Devil, in the Greek, the New Testament #1228: slanderer, false accuser.
– Belial, the Old Testament #1100: worthless, destruction, wickedness.
In John 8:44 it sums up Satan’s character this way. “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” If we are ever to have peace on the earth, Satan and his demonic government must be stopped. Satan cannot be stopped with guns, bombs, or sophisticated physical weaponry. He will be defeated by God through spiritual warfare as the Times and Seasons Digest proved from God’s word.
Satan’s original goal was to take God the Father’s position. When that failed, he tried to get Christ to worship him, as recorded in Matthew 4, to retain his position as god of this world. When this attempt failed as well, he was left with no alternative but to either destroy the earth before Christ could return and/or prevent the firstfruit harvest from reaching maturity.
It is important to clear God’s name at this time because Satan is using that beautiful name to move people in the direction he wants! It is the same old deception, and humanity keeps falling for it. Unsuspecting mankind has been duped into thinking it is God’s will to kill other human beings made in the image and likeness of God. Satan influences different races, ethnicities, and religions into feeling superior to others. Then he moves them to think they are doing God’s will when they destroy other nations, ethnicities, or religions.
Around the world today and in times past, mankind has been led into thinking God is a harsh dispenser of justice. Many have gone the next step and believe they are God’s sword to dispense that justice. Well, let it be known – God is not the murderer – Satan is! God is not the liar – Satan is! God is not cruel – Satan is! God and Satan have nothing in common. We must never apply Satan’s character traits to God, nor apply God’s beautiful qualities to Satan. To put it bluntly, God is a builder and Satan a destroyer. God is not going to wreak havoc on this earth, turning it into a disease-filled nuclear wasteland.
God does not want to pit nation against nation in some gladiator contest. He most certainly does not want different ethnic groups to engage in ethnic cleansing in His name. The last thing He wants is opposing faiths to offer up their sons and daughters in a modern form of infanticide to stir up World War III. God is about to stop this foolishness dead in its tracks. By now we should all be to the point we are sick of it. All mankind is made in the image and the likeness of God. We have studied the Bible and seen that the sun portrays God’s love and warmth for the earth. As H. W. Beecher once said, “The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the whole world’s joy.” Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is about to return for the whole world’s joy, not for just a select few who think they are special.
The good news is the gospel of that soon-coming kingdom of God. Christ is coming as mankind’s liberator and redeemer. He is not coming as a destroyer of the earth and the human race that He has made in His image and likeness. He is a God who keeps His word. His word in Genesis 8:22 after the flood is as follows, and it should give us peace of mind: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.” In chapter 9, verse 1 it goes on to say, “So God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.’”
God repeats this beautiful thought eloquently in Isaiah 45:18-19. “For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the earth and made it, who has established it, who did not create it in vain, who formed it to be inhabited: ‘I am the Lord, and there is no other. I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth; I did not say to the seed of Jacob, “Seek Me in vain”; I, the Lord, speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.’” God created this earth to be inhabited and not to become a wasteland, and He will not allow Satan to push mankind into annihilation.
Continue in Isaiah 45:22-24. “Look to Me, and be saved, all you ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. I have sworn by Myself; the word has gone out of My mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, that to Me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall take an oath. He shall say, ‘Surely in the Lord I have righteousness and strength. To Him men shall come, and all shall be ashamed who are incensed against Him.’”
Revelation 7:9-10 refers to an enormous group of people converted in the last days. “After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, ‘Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!’” What a time that will be!
It is time now for all who dwell on the earth to help clear God’s name, for all mankind to use the incomparable gift from God, their free will, and to reject ignorance and deceit. It is time to reject the source of such darkness and spread the light of the truth. The times and seasons are changing. The Millennium will soon be here! Christ repeatedly promises to come with little warning at a time that we least expect. Reject the doom sayers who proclaim war, drought, pestilence and worldwide devastation. There would be no surprise at the coming of Christ to the few survivors of such calamity. The beautiful world you see about you will go straight into the Millennium and only get better and better as time goes on.
As mankind unlearns war, lives in harmony and learns God’s way of life, he will become what God always intended. All mankind shall live in peace and abundance with Christ keeping yet another promise in John 10:10. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” Jesus Christ is a good shepherd, and He gave His life so that all of us may eventually have life in great abundance. He promises the Millennium of peace will come. That Millennium lies just ahead! Will you please help clear God’s name and prepare the world for the soon-coming Messiah, our Redeemer and our Liberator? There can be no greater honor than to help clear God’s name.
In conclusion, we have seen in Genesis 8 that until the end, God made the promise “…seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, and day and night shall not cease.” His promise is never to destroy the earth again in spite of man’s sin. He confirms that promise every time we see the rainbow in the sky. Genesis 9:14-15 “It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.”
