God’s Ingenious Timing and Communication Device

May 30, 2015

Good morning, everybody.  One of the latest technological marvels, which I am sure you have seen because it’s everywhere, is the smart watch.  These smart watches are really something.  They can do just about anything you can imagine, from keeping time to a GPS mode where they can tell you where you are on planet earth.  They connect you to the Internet.  They can be used as a communication device.  They can keep track of various vital health signs like your blood pressure, your pulse, and how many calories you have burned that day.  They have thousands of apps that they are coming up with for these watches.  You can look up your favorite restaurant or book a restaurant somewhere if you want to make a reservation.  All these things can be done off what they call a smart watch.  It’s an incredible device.  Mankind certainly has come a long way with their devices.

What if I told you that there is a device that can not only tell you the time and tell you where you are, but it can actually help you stay healthy.  It can actually help you stay alive.  It can provide all the energy that you need.  It can record history, and it can predict the future!  What if I told you such a device exists and has existed for a long time.  It’s in your Bible.  There is such a device, and it’s ancient.  It’s God’s ancient time-keeping device and communication device.  I call it God’s ingenious timing and communication device.

Today we are going to discuss this device, and to put it very succinctly, that device is the solar system!  It is the solar system combined with the word of God.  We are going to start in the Book of Genesis today.  We are going to take a look at these very fascinating Scriptures at the very beginning of the Bible.

If you have your Bible, please turn to Genesis chapter 1, verse 3.  It’s probably the most famous Scripture in the Bible, arguably so.  “Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.  And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.”

God said, let there be light, and He saw that the light was good.  That word “good” is the Hebrew word towb (#2896, Strong’s Concordance, 1995), and that means moral goodness for men and women.  It is a little different perhaps than what you thought.  Of course light is good.  We can see things, but God takes it way beyond just physical eyesight.  He said it’s towb.  It’s good for moral uprightness in men and women—in mankind.

Let’s go down a few verses to Genesis 1, verse 14:  “Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth’; and it was so.  Then God made two great lights:  the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night.  He made the stars also.  God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness.  And God saw that it was good.”

It was towb. It was good for mankind to develop moral goodness.

We need to look at a few other definitions here to start to grasp what God means by “let there be light” and what He had in mind.  When He says “He made them,” that is the Hebrew word asah (#6213, Strong’s Concordance, 1995), which means to do or to make, to accomplish or appoint.  When He says He “set them in the heavens,” that word “set” is nathem (#5414, Strong’s Concordance, 1995), which means to give or assign and appoint.

What these verses are telling us is that God didn’t literally create the sun, the moon, and the earth 6,000 years ago.  They were already there.  He assigned new significance—new importance—to the moon, to the sun, and indeed the earth itself.  God gave them significance that has to do with moral goodness.  It is something He wanted to develop in the human race.  They were to become guiding lights.  You have heard the term guiding light.  These would be guiding lights for the human race to help them become more in His image and likeness.

If we went to chapter 2 of Genesis, which we won’t do today, we read that God created Adam and Eve in His image and likeness to be like Him.  God is perfect.  He is very good.  God would use these physical celestial bodies to help us learn spiritual lessons.  They were to become teaching mechanisms.  The solar system was designed to help mankind understand the language of God so that we could understand the thoughts of God, the purposes of God, the intents of God, and what He wants to do for and with the human race.

You might want to put a marker in Genesis because we will come back there later.  Let’s go to Romans chapter 1.  God says something very interesting about creation.  Romans 1, verse 20:  “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse…”

If we know how to look at creation, it was designed to help us understand the mind of God.  It helps us understand His attributes of goodness and compassion and love for the human race.  It is as if everything created actually reveals a part of God’s thinking, His mindset, His fingerprints, and His handiwork, if we know how to look at it.  We need the Bible to understand that, but of course we must have the physical objects to look at.

Since we are talking about the sun and the moon and their relationship to the earth, let’s go to the Book of Psalms chapter 19.  We are going to read most of this chapter.  We are starting in Psalm 19, verse 1:  “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.  Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge.  There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard.  Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.”

Let’s pause there for a moment.  God is telling us that on a starry night when we see the moon move across the sky and we see the stars do their dance in the sky, there is a language.  There is a language that’s there for us to listen to, if we know how to hear it.  There are many Scriptures in the Bible where God says, for those who have ears to hear.  It takes creation in combination with the word of God to be able to hear what God is telling us.

Their line is literally talking about how they move across the sky.  It is important to realize that there is no place on the earth that is hidden from that language!  No matter where you are on the earth, you can see the sun, the moon, and stars.

Continuing in the second half of verse 4 of Psalm 19:  “In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun…”

A tabernacle is like where you worship.  It’s a holy place.  God set the sun there.  What for?  The physical sun itself is not holy, but God can use it for holy purposes.

He tells us in verse 5:   “…which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race.  Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat.”

There is nothing on earth hidden from the light and heat of the sun.  If there were a section of the earth that never saw the sunlight, it would be a dead place, indeed, for all life depends upon the sun.  We can see here the bridegroom refers to Jesus Christ, and the sun in the sky represents Jesus Christ.  It is a holy use for the sun. The sun itself should not be worshipped.  People have made that mistake.  God said, I can use it to help declare My thoughts and use it for holy purposes, so mankind can become morally better when they understand what I am trying to do by looking at creation through the lens of the Bible.

Verse 7 of Psalm 19:  “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple; the statues of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes…”

God tells us that by viewing the sun and learning what He has to say through the sun about Jesus Christ, we can see that the Ten Commandments that Christ gave us in the Bible—the law of God—help us to become pure.  They help us to become truly wise.  That’s moral goodness.

We should contemplate what’s happening in the heavens above and tie it with the word of God. When we act upon it, we can do just like God said in Genesis 1.  We become men and women who are morally better.  We have better character.  We become more like God the Father and Jesus Christ.

Continuing and repeating verse 8 of Psalm 19:  “The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.  More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.  Moreover by them Your servant is warned, and in keeping them there is great reward.”

God says you will be blessed if you understand these things and act upon them.  If you keep the law—the Ten Commandments—and if you make them a part of your life, that moral goodness comes with reward from God the Father.

Verse 12:  “Who can understand his errors?  Cleanse me from secret faults.”

Here King David, the Psalmist, is saying, help me, God, to understand my errors.  Help me to understand my secret faults.

He goes on to say in verse 13:  “Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins [sins he was committing without even realizing it]; let them not have dominion over me.  Then I shall be blameless, and I shall be innocent of great transgression.”

Psalm 19 takes us from the heavenly bodies right through to acknowledging the Ten Commandments and through to repentance, so that we can become morally better people.  That concept was right there at the beginning of the Bible in Genesis chapter 1.  Literally the entire Bible—the good news of the gospel itself—is to help us become morally better people.  We become more of the image of God the Father and Jesus Christ.  We have to understand these thoughts, and make them a part of us.  God gave us His word—the Bible—and all these created things that we see around us to help us grasp His thinking.  That’s what we saw in Romans chapter 1.

God goes a little deeper explaining this a little bit more in Isaiah chapter 55.  If you have your Bible, turn to Isaiah chapter 55.  The whole chapter is very interesting, but let’s start in Isaiah 55, verse 8.  Read Isaiah 55:8-13.

One of the signs of God’s word accomplishing something is that it literally lands upon the earth and makes the earth blossom and produce joyful fruits in mankind.  God’s word teaches us how to be like Him.  When we look at creation, we let the guiding lights help us determine certain things.  We will have the confidence to know that God is fully in charge of the entire universe, and, of course, planet earth.  But what He cares about is the human race and making the human race become more like Him.  That’s His purpose.

He says, I have sent My thoughts from the heavens (from His tabernacle) somewhere out there in the great universe to this earth. He says, My thoughts are like rain that land upon the earth.  When we look at the rain in creation landing upon the earth, it turns the earth green.  It becomes fruitful and bountiful.  God says, My thoughts are like rain, and they land on human beings.  When they land on human beings and human beings can take those words in like rain, it will sprout the seeds that He places within us.  It will help us to become fruitful and bountiful for Him.  Those words are the Bible, including the Old and New Testament.

We read the very beginning of the Old Testament, which is the very start of the Bible, in Genesis.  God said, these are the words of Genesis that I will give mankind.  The signs in the heavens will help them become morally better people.  We need to know what they are.  We need to know what He is getting at.  Is there anything we need to do to help them benefit us in our own lives?  There is, but we need to know how to read the signs in the Bible and how to read the signs in creation. Then we can understand the language of God in order to understand His thoughts.

His rain is doctrine and teachings, and we want it to bear fruit in our lives.  The earth needs His rain desperately at this time.

We are going to learn by combining Scripture with the solar system today.  The solar system is God’s physical and prophetic timing device.  God’s physical and prophetic timing device is ingenious!  It makes the smart watch look dumb!  And it’s been there for a long, long time!  It is yours to discover and make a part of your life.

Now let’s look back at Genesis chapter 1.  Go back to Genesis 1, verse 14:  “Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years…’”

So we can understand days and years, let’s look at that first.  We use that concept all the time.  Our smart watches, our calendars, our old fashioned analog watches like I have on my wrist all use that principle.  God said the sun and the moon are for days and years.  Simply put, the interaction of the sun, the moon, the earth, and their movements in the sky give us a way to track time.  The movements give us a 24-hour day, the 7-day week, and a 30-day (approximately) month.  Each month is literally about 29.5 days long.  That uses the moon and a lunar calculation in order to come up with a month.  As a matter of fact, that’s one of the definitions of moon.  Lunar is month.

The earth has 24 time zones.  If you travel around the earth, there are 24 time zones.  That’s how we come up with a 24-hour day, each hour having 60 minutes in it, and each minute having 60 seconds.  It is amazing how God had that all set up!  That’s what makes the earth and its relation to the sun and the speed at which it spins useful, when combined with coordinates in the sky as a GPS system.  It’s amazing.  Not only is the light from the sun good to produce light on earth, but we can use it as a GPS system and a timing system.  In essence, the solar system is a huge watch!

Accurate time can be kept with the solar system either through a lunar year that’s determined by the moon or solar year, a year determined by the sun.  The year gives us a natural rhythm that is repeated every year:  spring, summer, fall, winter.  These are the seasons.  Thousands of years ago mankind realized that these interactions with these heavenly bodies could be used to develop a calendar for keeping track of the seasons.  That was important because agriculture and the production of food goes by the seasons.

In the 1500’s mankind developed a mechanism called the watch.  The name watch literally comes from the watchman.  Not everyone could afford a watch, so each town and village would have a man with a watch.  He was the watchman who would walk through town declaring the time.  He would keep watch during the night:  12 midnight, 1 in the morning, 2 in the morning.  That was the watchman, so we have the term “watch.”

That made the watch a significant device in human history, and the watch has many parts.  You can see my watch here.  There is a case, which encloses the watch, and the movement which is inside.  If you were to open up an analog watch, you would see that there are many round meshed gears.  These gears, as well as the face of the watch, are based on the circle.  Every year time goes around as if in a circle, and it repeats itself every year.  The gears of your watch go around in circles to keep track of time.

This circular movement of gears precisely tracks the rotation of the earth, its orbit around the sun, and the moon around the earth.  Did you know that’s what it’s doing?  When you are wearing a watch, you have a miniature device to keep track of the solar system!  It doesn’t matter if it’s a smart watch or an analog watch, it does the same thing.  The face of the watch displays those seconds and minutes, and sometimes days, months, and the year itself.

Our solar system is like a huge celestial watch case!  In the movements is the movement of the planets around the sun, in particular the moon and the earth.  The way they rotate around one another and spin on their axis gives us the gears, you might say, of the solar system which ultimately results in how to keep track of time.  It’s all based on a 360 degree circle.

Interestingly enough, a solar year has 365.25 days in it.  That’s why we need a leap year every four years, so we can get the calendar back on track.  The lunar calendar has 354.37 days.  If you add them together, that’s 719.62.  Divide by 2 to get an average, and you come up with almost exactly 360.  You get 359.81 something something something, never quite exactly on 360, because God intends for time to go on forever!  It’s very interesting that it’s based on the 360 degree circle.  Literally the whole earth and the time zones use that knowledge for us to keep track of days and years, times and seasons.

Where does prophecy enter into this equation?  I like to say that there are three calendars in Genesis.  We have looked at the solar, and we have looked at the lunar.  But there is a third calendar there, and that is called the prophetic calendar.  We need to go back to Genesis 1.

Genesis 1, verse 14:  “Then God said, ‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years…’”

We have discussed days and years.  Now let’s look at time and seasons for a moment.  We can be simple in our view and say the seasons are spring, summer, fall, and winter.  However, when we look up the word “seasons” in the Hebrew, we find it is mowed (#4150, Strong’s Concordance, 1995).  Mowed has a fascinating definition!  Let me read this definition of mowed to you.

A mowed is “an appointment, i.e. a fixed time or season; specifically a festival; conventionally a year; by implication an assembly (as convened for a definite purpose); technically the congregation; by extension the place of meeting,” as a pre-determined sign. That definition of mowed is right out of your Strong’s Concordance.

We see it simply could say a season like spring, summer, fall, winter, but specifically what God is telling us here goes beyond tracking physical time to what He calls His festivals, which He says come around conventionally every year.  We mark these days off in a year.  By implication the assembly of God’s congregation for a specific purpose on designated days.  By extension a pre-determined place of meeting for a pre-determined reason!  We are talking about God’s holy days!

He is saying the sun and the moon can be used for keeping track of My time, My prophetic time.  He said, you need to learn this in order to become morally better people.  You need to get on My calendar.  You need to understand My timing mechanism.  That’s what God is telling us here.  He says, if you do, you can become morally better people.  You can develop holy righteous character.  You can become like God, made in His image and likeness, but you have to understand when you need to get together and what those days signify.  He says they come around every year on your conventional calendar, but they are showing something prophetic.  It is something that literally reaches out into the future!

By understanding God’s holy days, we can predict the future!  We can also look at the historical past from God’s perspective!  It’s a fascinating subject.  It’s too huge to get into today, but we will get into that because it’s so important.  Suffice it to say, God uses the solar system as an ingenious physical and spiritual timing device.  It helps us understand His thoughts and His plan for the human race and to understand prophecy.

The holy days come around year after year at designated times.  They picture prophetic events.  Some of those prophetic events have actually been fulfilled, like Passover—Christ having died as our Passover.  We need to go into those things and understand them more fully, so we can come in concert with God’s will and to use His timing device to become better people.  It is to make the earth a better place and to understand what God has in store for us and know what the future holds.  We need to grasp these days to understand God’s prophetic time piece.

It is as if a circle—what comes around conventionally each year—is like a wheel on a car or on a wagon.  It goes around and around, but the vehicle goes forward.  It can go backward too, and we don’t want to go backward.  We want to understand more and more about God.  God said, as this wheel turns, as My holy days turn, and as My seasons come and go, I am going forward.  Where is He going?  He is going toward a beautiful future for the earth.  He is going toward a time when men and women everywhere will become better moral creatures in the image and likeness of God.  We are nearly at a time that He calls the Millennium when the earth will be covered with peace.

Regardless of what you see out there in the world today, let it be known, this is not going to go on much longer.  If you learn to understand God’s timing mechanism, you’ll see why.  In future discussions, we will go into those events, so that you can put them to use in your life and gain the assurance that everything will be all right.

This prophetic circle goes on and on and rolls around, and we see that time marches forward.  We would look at them and say that there are numbers in the Bible that are significant which are too deep to get into today, but those numbers will make sense when we understand God’s timing device.  When you grasp the things like the solar system, time itself, and the Bible, you will know where you are in time.  You will understand how close we are to a beautiful future!

The apostles wanted to understand more.  Of course, they had the Savior right in front of them.  They could ask Him questions, so let’s go to Acts chapter 1.  They asked a very profound question, and something you might be thinking about right now!  This is after Christ’s death and resurrection when He fulfilled the holy day called Passover.  The brethren who believed in Him were preparing for the next holy day, the next mowed, which is Pentecost.

Christ says to the apostles in Acts 1, verse 4:  “And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, ‘which,’ He said, ‘you have heard from Me; for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holly Spirit not many days from now.’  Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, ‘Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?’”

They wanted a Messiah to come as a conquering general and to restore them to their former glory.  They were not comprehending God’s plan just yet.  Here is what Jesus Christ said to them in verse 7.

Verse 7 of Acts 1:  “And He said to them, ‘It is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority.  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.’”

Indeed a few days later on Pentecost, they received that power!  They did receive the knowledge and the ability to preach God’s truth—the gospel.  It has gone around the world, but still people don’t comprehend the language well enough.  It was not for them to understand times and seasons, but it is for you and me to understand times and seasons!

We are near the end of one age and the beginning of another age.  We are at the end of an age of calamity, suffering, and hardship under a cruel task master called Satan. We are about to enter a Millennium that is beautiful beyond what you and I can fully appreciate and imagine but one full of peace and joy as we saw in Isaiah 55.

God’s word will not go forth and fall from heaven like rain without accomplishing its purpose.  His purpose is to make mankind (you and I) more like Him, in His image and likeness.  This will result in peace around the earth.

Here we are at the end of the age of Satan, moving into a beautiful time that God has set aside that is the seventh day, you might say, of the creation week.  He says, it is for you at this time.  We could go through many Scriptures to understand the times and the season in which we live, and this discussion is to help you get started today.  If you understand the language of God and you can use His prophetic time piece in your life, you can have the assurance that all will be well.  You can start producing fruit in your life to make you more in the image and likeness of God at this time.  You don’t have to wait.

The world can become converted.  God’s process will bring the earth full circle to what He wanted.  If you went into Genesis 2 at the beginning of the Bible, you would find yourself in the Garden of Eden where He said, I have made Adam and Eve in My image and likeness.  He put them in His beautiful Garden.  We can turn to the last book of the Bible.  Let’s turn to Revelation chapter 2.  In the last book God tells us something interesting.  This is the message to the first of the seven Church eras, but it is a message that is active and useful for all of us.

Revelation 2, verse 7:  “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches [including us today].  To him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the Paradise of God.”

The tree of life was Jesus Christ in the Garden of Eden.  The paradise of God is the Garden of Eden.  God says, My purpose by My word and as demonstrated in the sun and the moon every night with a language in the sky is that the whole earth will become the way I wanted the Garden of Eden to be.  The whole earth will become a paradise in the Millennium!  That’s what Isaiah 55 was telling us.  There are Scriptures throughout the Bible that tell us the same thing, if we understand the language of God and if we understand His prophetic time piece.  It is an ingenious time piece that makes any watch that man has devised, the watch of a simpleton. God has designed time for His purpose, to move humanity ever closer to becoming like Him.

God will bless us with a beautiful Millennium.  It’s not that far ahead.  You can prepare for it now.  You will do a better job if you understand God’s prophetic time piece and what He is trying to tell you through the word of God and creation.

We are going to delve into this until we get to the bottom of it, you might say.  There is no way to get to the total bottom of God’s depth of thinking, but to understand this so well that you will know what time it is.  You will know what prophecy means to you, your family, and to the world at large and that God indeed is going to win on schedule, if not ahead of schedule.  There are Scriptures that indicate He will actually win a bit ahead of schedule.  He will make this earth beautiful and fruitful like paradise in the not-too-distant future.

Stick with us and learn more.  Go to our website, and view these discussions as they come out.  Study for yourself in the word of God, so you can comprehend the language of God.  Use His ingenious timing device in your life.
