Demystifying the False Prophet, Part 2

By John J. Blanchard

December 7, 2013

We are starting the subject of the false prophet today by turning to Revelation chapter 16 beginning in verse 12.  “Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared.  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet.  For they are spirits of demons…”

We want to focus on the fact that these are three separate beings here.  There is the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.  It is important to keep in mind that the false prophet is a separate entity from Satan, and what we are establishing right now is that he is a spirit being.  It is just like the beast.  We proved the beast was a spirit being.

Once again we are going to turn to Revelation 19.  We have a few Scriptures in Revelation that prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that these three are all spirit beings.  We know Satan is a spirit.  He is the dragon.  We are proving that the beast and the false prophet are also spiritual.

Turn to Revelation chapter 19, verse 20:  “Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image.  These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.”

We see that prior to the Millennium these two beings—the false prophet and the beast—are captured and thrown into the lake of fire.  We can see this happens as the Millennium is getting ready to start by reading in chapter 20.  Revelation 19:20 is what we just quoted.  Now we are reading Revelation 20, beginning in verse 1:  “Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.  He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years…”

We are talking about the beast and the false prophet in Revelation 19:20 getting thrown into the lake of fire.  Satan is put into a separate place where he is bound for a thousand years.  These three spirit beings are dealt with for this thousand year period.

By dropping down in the same chapter of Revelation 20 and going to verse 7, we will see that at the end of the thousand years, the beast and the false prophet are still alive.  Revelation 20, verse 7:  “Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.  They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city.  And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.  The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are.”

We see at the end of the thousand years Satan is now cast into the lake of fire where the beast and the false prophet are.  In order to live a thousand years anywhere, you must be a spirit being.  Without a doubt, these three are spirit beings.  We have the dragon, which is Satan, the beast, and the false prophet.  That’s critical to know because a lot of people are waiting for a false prophet and a beast power leader to arise here at the end of the age and do a lot of damage to the world.  When in affect, these three beings have been operating among mankind for a long, long time.

What was the purpose?  We discovered in the first two sermons what the purpose was and what Satan was trying to achieve.  Let’s review that again right now.  Satan wants to be like God.  Turning to Isaiah chapter 14 in the Old Testament, I am going to read verse 12.  Isaiah 14, starting in verse 12 we read:  “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!”

We know that was the name Lucifer had before his name was turned to Satan.  His name was reflective of what he was.  We will get into that a little bit later.  His name was changed to Satan after that.

Continuing in verse 12:   “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations!  For you have said in your heart:  ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God [which means the other angels]; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation [which means the Church] on the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’”

Satan’s goal is to be like God.  He wants to be in charge of the Church or Christianity, to be the ruler of the world, and to be above the other angels.  He really thinks a lot of himself obviously.  He wants to be like God, so he wants his position back that he had in heaven at one time as we will see in a minute.  He wants to be above the other angels just like God.  In other words, we could say he wants to be part of the Godhead.  He wants to be there alongside God the Father and Jesus Christ forming a trinity with Satan right there among the three of them.

Now let’s go back to the beginning of Isaiah 14, and we will read verse 3.  Isaiah 14, verse 3:  “It shall come to pass in the day the Lord gives you rest from your sorrow, and from your fear and the hard bondage in which you were made to serve, that you will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say:  ‘How the oppressor has ceased, the golden city ceased!  The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers; he who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he who ruled the nations in anger…’”

We know that Satan is the one who is ruling the nations right now.  It is his government, his organization, that is influencing mankind.  Here he is called the king ofBabylonbecause he and his system work through people.  They work through people.  We talked about that in the sermon about the beast power.  You could go back and review that.  He works through people with various ways of influencing them.  Here he is called the king ofBabylon.  It is a title that he has as we will see as we go along.  It is a mystery type of a title because it is reflecting his kingdom which is named after Babylon.  The physical kingdom of Babylon was named after him.

We see in chapter 14 it starts out in the beginning by talking about the king of Babylon, and then it quickly switches to calling the true power behind the throne Lucifer—Satan—the one who rules the nations.  We saw that in verses 12-16.

Now let’s go back to the Book of Ezekiel to see more information about this Lucifer.  Here we are going to see once again a physical king discussed, and it is Satan with his influence operational in this king.  Ezekiel 28, verse 1:  “The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, ‘Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, “Thus says the Lord God:  ‘Because your heart is lifted up, and you say, “I am a god, I sit in the seat of gods, in the midst of the seas.”  Yet you are a man, and not a god, though you set your heart as the heart of a god.  (Behold, you are wiser than Daniel [being facetious here]!  There is no secret that can be hidden from you!  With your wisdom and your understanding you have gained riches for yourself, and gathered gold and silver into your treasuries…’”’”

We are talking here about a physical king of Tyre that God is upset with for exalting himself and calling himself a god.  But it says to the prince at the beginning.  It says the prince of the god of Babylon.  Satan is the prince of the power of the air.  He is the prince with the influence to work in human beings, and as we go through this chapter a little bit further, you will see that this is indeed talking about Satan and his power on mankind.

Go to verse 11 of Ezekiel 28:   “Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Son of man, take up a lamentation for the king of Tyre, and say to him, “Thus says the Lord God:  ‘You were the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.  You were in Eden, the garden of God…’”’”

Obviously the king of Tyre did not come on the scene until several thousand years after the Garden of Eden.  He was not alive during the Garden of Eden.  We are talking about a spirit being here.  It is a spirit being, obviously Satan as we will see as we go along.

Continue reading again in verse 13 of Ezekiel 28:  “You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering:  the sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold  The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.  You were the anointed cherub who covers…”

Now we are obviously talking about an angel here.

Verse 14:  “….I established you; you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.  You were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, till iniquity was found in you.”

He was perfect.  This was the most perfect being God ever created.  This was Lucifer, and God changed his name to Satan meaning adversary when iniquity was found in him.

Continuing in verse 16 of Ezekiel 28:  “By the abundance of your trading you became filled with violence within, and you sinned; therefore I cast you as a profane thing out of the mountain of God; and I destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the fiery stones.”

Satan himself was not destroyed.  His position amidst the fiery stones and amidst the other angels at the throne of God in heaven was taken away from him.  His name was changed from Lucifer, meaning light bringer or truth bringer, to Satan, meaning adversary or arch enemy of God.

There was an abundance of Satan’s trading, which is his influence.  He was trading with other angels at that time.  He was causing them to become demons.  Eventually in humanity he was trading among them with his influence and causing them to do things against God and God’s will.  Examples are the king of Tyre and the king of Babylon, as we mentioned in Isaiah 14.

Satan had tremendous power and authority vested in him as this angel who was amongst the fiery stones and at God’s throne.  We can continue in verse 17 of Ezekiel 28:  “Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor; I cast you to the ground, I laid you before kings, that they might gaze at you.”

This will eventually happen among the human beings, the kings of the earth, and humanity when the Day of Atonement is fulfilled and Satan is captured.  We saw this in Revelation 19.  He was put into restraint.  Until that happens and that day is fulfilled, he is among humanity trading in his wares, his influence, and his ideas.  He is causing grief, sorrow, anxiety, war, fighting, and destruction among the human race.  This is what his modus operandi is.  It is to destroy what God is trying to do and elevate himself back into a position of power.

Just so you know, the name Lucifer is the ancient Arabic name heylel (#1966, Strong’s Concordance, 1995) which is light bringer, the morning star.  In the ancient Hebrew he was known as the morning star, the light bringer, and that means to shine.  We know the truth is signified by light, so he was in charge of bringing truth to the earth.  When iniquity was found in him, he was cast away from his position.  His position was taken from him, and he became Lucifer, as we said.  He became an arch rival of God.

Lucifer was one of three archangels.  There was Lucifer whose name means morning star, as we just said.  There was the archangel Michael whose name means one like God.  There was also Gabriel which means man of God.  These are the three super angels or the three archangels.  It is important to explain that angels can be called men and are sons of God, but they are not human.  Remember Gabriel means man of God.  I want to explain this because there are a lot of strange ideas going around currently, and they have probably been going around for a long time, confusing certain Scriptures about angels as men.

Go to Job chapter 1.  Go all the way back to the Book of Job chapter 1.  Job chapter 1, verse 6:  “Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came among them.  And the Lord said to Satan, ‘From where do you come?’  So Satan answered the Lord and said, ‘From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking back and forth on it.’”

We can see Satan is portrayed as being in charge of the earth.  He walks back and forth on it and pretty much has his way with humanity.  He has come before the throne of God, and he is called a son of God.

If we go to Isaiah 14 where we just were, we can read a little further into it.  After we talked about him trying to ascend above the stars of God and being like God, we are told here in Isaiah 14, verse 16:  “Those who see you will gaze at you [this is at the fulfillment of the Day of Atonement], and consider you, saying:  ‘Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world as a wilderness and destroyed its cities, who did not open the house of his prisoners?’”

We see Lucifer, now called Satan, is called a man.  He is not a physical man.  He is not flesh and blood.  He is a spirit being.

Daniel 9 refers to Gabriel as a man.  Let’s quickly go to Daniel chapter 9, verse 20 where Daniel is writing:  “Now while I was speaking, praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the Lord my God for the holy mountain of my God, yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.”

We see this other archangel Gabriel is also called a man.  They are not physical flesh and blood people.  They are sons of God.  It’s important to realize that not being flesh and blood there are certain things they cannot and have never been able to and will never be able to do.  An example would be procreate with human beings.  There are weird things going around about such things.

Let’s go to Luke chapter 20 to confirm this with a couple of Scriptures.  Luke chapter 20, verse 34:  “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage [this is speaking of human beings].  But those who are counted worthy to attain that age [meaning after the resurrection], and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.’”

Eventually mankind—those who are resurrected and become spirit beings—will be like angels.  There will be no marriage that can take place anymore.  Go back for the full story in Matthew chapter 22.

Turn quickly back to Matthew chapter 22 and get the whole gist of this.  Read Matthew 22:23-33.

Christ puts to rest this whole idea of angels being able to marry or procreate with human beings because He says, after the resurrection, human beings will be like them.  There will be no marriage.  There will be no procreation that way.  That puts to rest this strange idea that there is somehow a demonic mix taking place on the earth, because that goes to horrible places which no Christian should have anything to do with.  That is a warning that I am giving you that is out of the Scriptures as well.  I don’t want to devote any time to that.  The point is angels can be called sons of God or termed “men” in the Bible, though they are not flesh and blood.

Now let’s go back to the point we are dealing with here.  Satan was originally Lucifer, an archangel.  He was an angelic being who brought light—he brought truth—to the earth.  He was termed the morning star.  Satan’s goal was, one, to maintain what he had, which is control of the earth, as we saw in Job 1.  Two, he wanted to regain his old position and run it his way.  He would like to be able to have access to the throne of God.  He wants to ascend to the throne of God and be like God as part of the Godhead.  He also wants to change time, seasons, and laws.  We don’t have time to get into that today.  We hope to in the near future.

There are several obstacles in Satan’s way.  First of all, there is man, whom he did defeat with death except for one man, Jesus Christ.  There are two archangels who stand in his way.  There is Michael whom we saw in the first sermon who fights the beast, and there is Gabriel the other archangel.  There also was in times past ancient Israel to whom God revealed a lot of truth.  They had the prophets write His prophecies into the Bible for us.  They stood in his way, and in particular among the tribes of Israel were the Jews.  That is the tribe Jesus Christ was descended from.

Obviously Christ stood in Satan’s way and still stands in his way.  He became the Messiah and lived a perfect life, dying for all of mankind.  Lastly what stands in Satan’s way of God fulfilling His purpose is the body of Christ, the Church.

Satan defeated man with death at the Garden of Eden when he got man to fall.  Then Jesus Christ overturned that penalty for those who would follow Him and receive the Holy Spirit.  Satan’s only hope now to defeat God the Father and Jesus Christ is to prevent the body of Christ from fulfilling its destiny.

We have a war between the God of the Bible (the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) and the war against the god of this world.  That is god spelled with a little “g.”  We have the God of the universe on one side and Satan on the other side.  Satan keeps losing one battle after the other.  Now his only hope is to defeat the Church.  He has done a marvelous job attacking Christianity and making a mess of things.  That’s not going to last much longer.

This whole thing was described in a very brief way but a very important and succinct way in Genesis.  If you go back to Genesis 3, I believe we talked about this in one of the earlier sermons.  Let’s review this.  After the fall of man when death entered the human race, God had some things to say to Satan.

Genesis 3, starting in verse 14:  “So the Lord God said to the serpent:  ‘Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle, and more than every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life [which means to destroy mankind].  And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.’”

There is enmity with Eve and her seed which ultimately was ancientIsrael.  Specifically this was the Jews down through the Jewish lineage where Jesus Christ came from and eventually the body of Christ, which is the Church.  There is enmity.  There is war between these two systems.  God is currently waging war on the earth through His Church.  But He has working with the Church his two archangels, Michael and Gabriel, and of course Christ’s Holy Spirit.  You have two opposing spiritual armies organized for war.  We have to emphasize that they are opposites.

Let’s talk about a few examples.  Christ is called the light of the world.  Satan is darkness.  Christ brings life to the earth.  Satan brings death.  Christ is a creator and a builder.  Satan is a destroyer.  Christ brings truth.  Satan brings lies.  Christ’s capital isJerusalem, the city of peace.  Satan’s capital isBabylon, meaning confusion, to mix, and fear.

I want to emphasize the fact that there are two spiritual versions of these physical cities. Babylonno longer exists on the earth, at least theBabylonthat existed back in Nebuchadnezzar’s day.  Just as there is a physicalJerusalemon the earth, there is a spiritualJerusalemabove, and there is a spiritualBabylonabove Satan’s kingdom where he operates from.

Turn to Galatians chapter 4 to confirm this concept.  We won’t read the whole chapter.  We will start in Galatians chapter 4, verse 23:  “But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise, which things are symbolic.”

We are talking here about symbolism between the free which are those who have the Holy Spirit, and those who are still in bondage.

Verse 24:  “…which things are symbolic.  For these are the two covenants…”

There was the first covenant that was physical and a second covenant that was spiritual.  We understand that.

Continuing in verse 24:  “…the one from Mount Sinai which gives birth to bondage, which is Hagar—for this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and corresponds toJerusalemwhich now is, and is in bondage with her children…”

We are being told here that the physical bondage ofJerusalem, the physical city, and the people who inhabit there are still concurrent.  It is still going on.  But theJerusalemabove is free which is the mother of us all.  That’s verse 26.

Verse 26:  “…but theJerusalemabove is free, which is the mother of us all.”

We see that there is a spiritualJerusalemabove the earth.  We know this heavenlyJerusalemwill eventually descend to the earth.  Revelation tells us that.  It is important to realize that on earth there are many physical things that are portraying something in the spirit realm.  These two cities are among those things. Babylonis the other one.

Turn to Revelation chapter 17 to see this spiritual city ofBabylonspoken of.  Read Revelation 17:1-6.

This is a description of a spiritual city above the earth from where Satan’s domain is and where his influence comes from.  We know this is spiritual because John saw it in the spirit.  He is talking about aBabylonthat has destroyed God’s saints—the saints of Jesus.  Of course,Babylonhas disappeared as an entity physically on the earth about 2,500 years ago.  ThisBabylondoes not exist on the earth anymore, but Satan’s system does.

We see that there is a spiritual city, and we know if we were to continue in chapter 17 and 18 that city is about to fall.  PhysicalBabylonfell a long time ago portraying what God is going to do to this spiritualBabylon.  The point is, these spiritual entities exist out there.  There isJerusalemandBabylonfrom where God’s power and Satan’s power emanate.  Satan wants to reach his goals by taking over God’s city, or at least in the spiritual realm becoming a third member of the Godhead.  This would form a trinity:  God the Father, Jesus Christ and himself.  He has his organization behind him to achieve that goal.

Go to Ephesians chapter 6.  Ephesians chapter 6 talks about how this is organized.  This is the armor of God chapter.  We won’t read the whole section on the armor, but we want to establish how Satan rules in the nations.  Ephesians 6, verse 10:  “Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

We have a description of Satan whom we are really fighting and his system.  They are described as powers and principalities.  In other words, it is like principalities on the earth.  On the earth you have nations, states or provinces, cities, towns, and townships.  God says Satan’s system is organized in the same way.  He has the earth divided over principalities and demons over those principalities.  Over and above those demons are higher ranking demons until you work your way up the chain of command to Satan himself.  Eventually when God’s kingdom is extant on the earth, it will operate the same way.  We know that Christ says His saints will have five cities or ten cities to rule over.  We are talking about two opposites.  Satan is currently in charge, but not for much longer.

Christ said in Matthew 11:12 that thekingdomofGodsuffers violence to this day.  Let’s go to Matthew 11 just to confirm.  It’s a violent battle.  It is a spiritual war, and we see the physical evidence on earth.  Matthew 11, verse 12 where Christ says this:  “And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.”

We see that there was a huge battle that was going on for a long time in heaven.  You have Satan and the demons organized against God and His angels.  Satan somehow convinced one-third of the angels to join him in this rebellion.

If you turn to Revelation chapter 12, you will see the state we are in currently.  This is speaking of after Christ’s resurrection.  Revelation chapter 12, verse 7:  “And war broke out in heaven:  Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer.  So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

We see not only had Satan lost his position, as we read in Ezekiel 28, but after Christ’s ascension, he and his demons were kicked out of heaven.  They no longer have any access to that throne of God.  Satan is desperately trying to get back there and get his old power back.

In this war we see that Michael, who is in charge of God’s army as far as violently fighting, won a battle with Satan and his demons, and they were cast to the earth.  The war continues on the earth.  We will continue reading in verse 10 of Revelation 12:  “Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down.  And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.’”

The only way the Church can win is with the blood of Christ because Satan is that powerful.  But it is prophesied here that the Church will ultimately win.

Continuing in Revelation 12, verse12:  “Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them!  Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea!  For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”

From that point his days were numbered.  From that time forward, he has very little time left to accomplish his goal of destroying the Church and hopefully regaining his position at the throne of God.  That was his reason for doing the attacks on mankind and the attacks on the Church.

Let’s look at this organization.  First I want to look at God’s system.  These are two hierarchical systems:  God’s kingdom and Satan’s kingdom.  God’s system is organized in this way.  I have at the top of the page God the Father and right under Him Jesus Christ.  Then I put two divergent arrows dropping down from that.  One arrows goes to the archangel Michael who is like an army general, but the chief general.  He is like a five-star general, you might say.  In the other direction, we have Gabriel who is the other archangel.  He became the message bringer.  If you recall, he brought the message to Daniel.  We read that in Daniel 9.  He brought the message to Mary that Jesus Christ was going to come as the Messiah, so he is the chief message bringer.

Underneath those two angels we have other angels.  Underneath Michael we have other angels organized by rank to fight in a war-like way.  Under Gabriel you have other angels organized by rank to fight with messages and the truth.  He fights to bring the truth.  Underneath them you have the Church—the body of Christ.  It is divided into the 144,000 and then many others.

Turn, if you would, for just a moment to Hebrews chapter 2.  Let’s start in verse 6:  “But one testified in a certain place, saying [speaking now of the Old Testament]:  ‘What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You take care of him?  You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, and set him over the works of Your hands.  You have put all things in subjection under his feet.’”

We see here that angels for a time are above mankind.  Eventually those roles will be reversed, and God’s saints will be above and in charge of angels.  We are even told in Corinthians that they will judge the angels.  It shows you the hierarchy of God’s system, how it is organized, and how it wages war with Satan.

Let’s briefly look at Satan’s system.  On my page I have Satan.  In brackets I put “the dragon.”  I have two divergent arrows dropping down from Satan.  One is the beast organized like his five-star general to wage war.  Going in the other direction, dropping down from Satan we have the false prophet.  That’s the main subject of this study.  The false prophet is a false message bringer.  It is the opposite of Gabriel.

Under each of these beings we have other assorted demons by rank.  I would throw underneath the beast at least two of the horsemen, probably, of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse.  Perhaps there are the four winds mentioned in Daniel that stir mankind up and stir up the nations.  Underneath the false prophet we have other assorted demons, specifically lying spirits which are mentioned in the Old Testament and probably two of the four horsemen of the Apocalypse that spread lies and deceit.  Underneath each of them there are many lesser demons over principalities who help them try to accomplish the goal that Satan has in mind.

It is very important to notice that both of these systems are directly opposite.  They are directly opposed to each other and organized in the same way with Satan’s, of course, being a counterfeit and trying to achieve evil.  Then we have God’s system being the true and trying to achieve good.

Now let’s focus on the rest of the sermon on the false prophet.  There are two opposing spirits of prophecy.  Obviously we have the false prophet, as we just mentioned.  He was mentioned in Revelation 19:20.  We read that.  Also we read Revelation 20:10 about how he was alive before the Millennium, and after the Millennium he is still in the fiery trial, and he is going to go in the lake of fire.  In Revelation 16 we saw that he is mentioned there as part of this triad:  the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet.

The definition of false prophet in the Greek is pseudoprophetese (#5578, Strong’s Concordance, 1995).  It comes from the word pseudes (#5571, Strong’s, 1995).  Pseudes means untrue, erroneous, deceitful, and wicked.  Pseudoprophetese means a spurious prophet.  It’s a false prophet.  Keep in mind there must be the opposite version in God’s kingdom, and that is Jesus Christ’s Holy Spirit.  One is of Christ, and one is of a system of anti-Christ.  It is the opposite of Christ.

Go to Revelation chapter 19.  It is speaking of Christ after the marriage supper.  It is the marriage between the Church and the Lamb.  Revelation 19, verse 10:  “And I fell at his feet to worship him [this is John speaking].  But he said to me, ‘See that you do not do that!  I am your fellow servant, and of your brethren who have the testimony of Jesus.’”

This angels tells John, don’t worship me.  Then lastly he says here in verse 10:  “Worship God!  For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Jesus’ words and Jesus’ thoughts are the spirit of prophecy.  It is the Holy Spirit that conveys His word of truth.  Jesus Christ is the true spirit of prophecy, and He does His Father’s bidding.  Luke chapter 10 tells us that.

Go back to Luke chapter 10, verse 21:  “In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, ‘I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes.  Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.  All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.’  Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, ‘Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.’”

Jesus Christ revealed the Father, and He revealed the truth of prophecy to His disciples and to Christianity who would listen to Him ever since.  This was done through His Holy Spirit, but it was subject to the will of His Father.  John chapter 6 tells us the same thing.

We are going to the gospel of John chapter 6 where Christ is speaking.  Read John 6:27-32.

It comes from the Father at His direction.

Continuing in John 6, verse 33:  “For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

Jesus Christ comes down at God the Father’s direction.

Verse 34:  “Then they said to Him, ‘Lord, give us this bread always.’  And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life.  He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.  But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe.  All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.  For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.’”

He said, I didn’t come to do My will, but the will of the One who sent Me.

Verse 39 of John 6:  “This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.  And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Christ works and does the bidding of the Father.  He does His will.  Christ through the Holy Spirit is what He operates through.

Turn a few pages over to John chapter 14.  Christ says this in John 14, verse 15:  “If you love Me, keep My commandments.  And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth…”

The helper is the Spirit of truth.  Jesus Christ is the Spirit of prophecy.  Let’s read verse 17 again in its entirety.

Verse 17 of John 14:  “…the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

He comes to His people, His children, in the form of the Holy Spirit.  He dwells in us.  That’s how we know that Jesus Christ dwells in us.  It is by the Holy Spirit, the true Spirit of prophecy.

Christ is the Holy Spirit of truth.  Under Him, working with Him and for Him are Michael, Gabriel, and an array of angels.  Specifically, messages that must come from the Father in heaven and which are to be revealed and understood by us by the Holy Spirit go through Gabriel.  Also helping Gabriel are the angels who work under him to bring the truth and messages to reveal things like they did to Daniel in the Old Testament and to the Church.  It is the Holy Spirit that opens us up to knowledge and which helps us understand the mind of God and what God the Father is trying to achieve.

In opposition to this beautiful system to bring truth to mankind is Satan as the father of lies and his spurious false prophet.  Turn to the gospel of John chapter 8, verse 43 where Christ is speaking:  “Why do you not understand My speech?  Because you are not able to listen to My word.”

He is talking to the Pharisees and Sadducees here.  He says this in verse 44:  “You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do.  He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.  But because I tell the truth, you do not believe Me.  Which of you convicts Me of sin?  And if I tell the truth, why do you not believe Me?  He who is of God hears God’s words; therefore you do not hear, because you are not of God.”

There are people of God’s system who hear the truth because the Holy Spirit is operational in them.  Then there is the rest of the world who is in tune with Satan, the prince of the power of the air we are told.

Satan is the father of lies.  He is the father of untruth.  Under Satan are the beast and the false prophet who do his bidding and try to accomplish his will.  The false prophet in particular disseminates lies, specifically false understandings of prophecy, various heresies, twisted ideas and doctrines, and all manner of dogmatic deceptions that lead to strife among mankind.  He causes confusion among the human race as to how to worship God and who God is.  The false prophet also has to work in people just like the Holy Spirit works in people.  The two systems are in direct opposition, but they are both working in people.

Turn to II Corinthians chapter 11.  Paul says this in II Corinthians 11, verse 12:  “But what I do, I will also continue to do, that I may cut off the opportunity from those who desire an opportunity to be regarded just as we are in the things of which they boast.  For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ.  And no wonder!  For Satan  himself transforms himself into an angel of light.  Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.”

The two systems are operational and at war with each other, and Paul is describing  them here.  He says, I am working with the Holy Spirit and trying to tell you the truth.  But there are false apostles, deceitful workers, and such who are spreading lies from Satan who has transformed himself into an angel of light.  He is no longer the light bringer, but he wants us to think he is.  He wants to deceive us into thinking he is.  He has arrayed under him lots of demons who work through people and spread false doctrines through the false prophet.

We have the beast taking peace from the earth through war and violence, and there is the false prophet spreading lies among the human race.

What are the things that we need to be careful of and aware of, now that we understand this?  Turn to II Peter chapter 3, verse 14:  “Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand…”

Peter is saying Paul is bringing you real heavy meat.  Sometimes it’s hard to understand.  You need the help of the Holy Spirit obviously to grasp it.

Continuing in II Peter 3, verse 16:  “…which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.  You therefore, beloved, since you know this beforehand, beware lest you also fall from your own steadfastness, being led away with the error of the wicked; but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be the glory both now and forever.  Amen.”

Peter is warning.  He says people are twisting Paul’s writings, and they are doing Satan’s bidding when they are doing that.  They are unstable people who are twisting, and it is the false prophet really who is influencing them to misunderstand the Scripture.

I Peter talks about this as well.  Go to I Peter chapter 1, verse 16:  “…because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’  And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.  He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.”

We need to have our faith and hope in the truth and not in physical things.  Satan turns us to physical things by confusing the doctrines, the prophecies, and the truth of God.  He turns us away from the spiritual beauty of God’s way of life and wants us to be looking at the wrong things and ways to preserve our lives.  He wants us to follow doctrines that really come from the spurious false prophet.

We don’t need to turn there because we read it earlier, but in Revelation 12:9 it says Satan deceives the whole world.  He has done a remarkable job.  He has done a fantastic job of deceiving the world!  Now is the time to be enlightened to let the truth shine in your life.

We learned earlier in one of the last sermons that we need to starve the beast in order to remove his influence from the world.  We need to stop letting him work in our lives, because he must feed on human beings.  But now it’s time to deny the false prophet his power by following the truth.  We need to weaken his personal influence within mankind by shining God’s light in the darkness of this world.  The more lights that shine in people—the more of God’s truth enlightens individuals in the world—the less the darkness.

Recently there was an advertisement on television.  I assume it was based on fact.  It said a single candle can be seen in the darkness ten miles away by human beings.  It shows you the power of light.  If a single candle can be picked up by the human eye ten miles away, how much more so God’s truth?  As more and more candles get lit around the world, we can expunge the darkness.  Just as we starve the beast with the shining of light, we diminish the false prophet.  We weaken him.

I want to conclude with Matthew chapter 5.  Beginning in verse 14 Christ tells His disciples this:  “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so thine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

It’s time to let God’s light shine powerfully on the earth.  We can do that by letting the true prophet, Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit, teach us His ways and teach us the truth.  Then we can illuminate a very dark world.  We can do this with greater and greater power, as God has chosen this time at the end of the age to reverse the effects of the beast and the false prophet, starting by using those Christians with an ear to hear.
