Definition: Character

The fifth edition of the American Heritage Dictionary defines character as “1 The combination of mental characteristics that distinguishes a person or group.  2a Moral strength; integrity…”  Biblically speaking, character is using one’s free will to do what is right over what is wrong, even when it is the more difficult choice.

Choosing good over evil often requires strength in the face of peer pressure and even persecution.  Good character requires perseverance, self-control, and humility.  God calls character growth “bearing fruit” because it is a process which takes time, effort, and diligence.
